Chapter 4

T

here it was, in all its nerdy gaming glory. A musty chest straight out of any RPG title was sitting casually before her eyes.

After defeating what her appraisal skill had called a Silver Scaled Nian, Sarah had found a small nook in a corner of the chamber. It was a good thing to because the Nian for all the trouble it had been had only dropped a few scales before being absorbed through the floor of the dungeon. Seeing a monster she had just killed slowly be absorbed into the stone floor was going to live rent free in her head for quite some time.

Now however it was just her and her very first legit fantasy world loot chest! Her heart was pounding with excitement, and her hands were shaking as she approached the chest. It was an old wooden trunk, with rusted hinges with a musty smell emanating from it. Sarah cautiously opened the lid, half-expecting an explosive or deadly trap.

Thankfully nothing happened apart from the rusty complaint of the aged hinges opening. Inside the chest, she found a collection of items: a potion bottle filled with a golden liquid, a small leather pouch filled with gold coins, and a folded-up piece of parchment. Her eyes widened as she picked up the parchment and read its contents.

It was a map, detailing the layout of what she guessed to be the dungeon. A small ink blot flashed in what looked like the nook where she was crouched. Getting up she wandered around a little. Sure enough, as she moved so to did the ink blot, pinging her location in real time. A wave of relief washed over her as she realized that she would no longer have to wander aimlessly through the labyrinthine tunnels. With this map, she could plot her course and avoid any unnecessary dangers.

A nasty thought popped into her head that deflated the delight she had been riding. This baby could lift the fog of war that made the dungeon terrifying for many adventurers. Would it be alright if she kept this to herself? Would it be a crime to keep it if she were somehow found out? But she had to keep this, it was a literal ticket to all the best kept secret of her very first starter dungeon! For now, she would have to table the ethical battle for another time. She was still in the middle of an active dungeon crawl and her taste for loot had hardly been slated.

Sarah smiled triumphantly, feeling proud of herself for having come this far. She stowed away the loot into her item box, making sure to keep the map as the first item option to appear. As she stood up and prepared to move on, she couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement coursing through her veins. This was just the beginning of her adventure, and who knows what other treasures and secrets awaited her in the depths of tis dungeon.
